In the mid 1990's, the GS Boulder cycling team was a force on the Colorado racing scene. The riders consistently finished in the top 10 in both the Men Pro-1-2 and the Men 3 categories. The title sponsor was the prestigious Morgul Bismark bicycle shop, on The Hill in Boulder, owned by retired pros Davis Phinney and Ron Kiefel.
Late in 1997, the Morgul Bismark shop closed, and most of the GS Boulder riders were forced to move to other teams. Instead of disbanding, they chose to move as a group to the Pro Peloton bicycle team for the 1998 season. As a consequence of this move the GS Boulder name was retired,
and for a few years the team raced under the shop name, as a coherent group within the Pro Peloton squad.
The GS Boulder/Pro Peloton team continued to develop, and in 2000 the men placed first in the American Cycling Association's (ACA) Best All Around Team (BAT) category. In 2001 the team repeated in the Best All around competition and the Best All Around Rider (BAR). In 2002 a reinvigorated elite team placed first in the Pro-1-2 competition and Christian McCarthy was the best individual.
In the winter of 2003/04 we separated from Pro Peloton in order to better support, develop, and meet our team needs. In so doing, we brought back our name with its proud history, GS Boulder Cycling. GS Boulder is now an eclectic group of riders and racers, with a wide range of interests in cycling sports. Many of our members are currently prominent in the local road racing, triathlon, and mountain bike racing scenes, and have held high places in the BAR/BAT classification.
